Match 11

5 Ways Spring League . Match 5

June 15 th 2007

Friday night at the Lib all normal suspects present. Congratulations to young Charlie Ford and Granddad Derek Ford for winning the mixed pairs at Weston Lawns. They beat Sue and Mark Elton with 23lb 8 oz to their 22lb 6oz.

Mark Elton is spending Saturday at Coomb Lake Bream Fishing. Coomb still operates the close season. Friday night is a bit deflated with no match tomorrow. The deluge of rain over the last couple of days has ruined the chance of good sport for the rivers as opening day 16 th approaches.

June 16 th

Saturday morning breakfast as usual and I collect the bait for Sundays match. Andy and I nip over to Hinckley to get cat meat with a little success 20 tins.

Saturday afternoon – we sit in church done up like a dogs dinner, low and behold the roof never caved in.

Match 11 report 5 Ways

Sam and Andy being at the wedding left an opportunity for some one to go to 5 ways and write a match report. I decided to get there for the weigh in and so arrived at 2.30ish it would have been earlier if I was more certain of where it was. I had been given good directions from Andy but unfortunately drove direct from Birmingham not from the Lib and this confused my bearings.

I was directed to the match having first driven up to and parked by the Carp Lake . I was on the look out for Aubrey Strawberry after having heard all about him and his dog.

The match was pegged 1-8 on the preferred left bank. My first encounter was with Dean on peg 1. After he had a panic about me nearly stepping on his feeder rod (I don't think I was going to anyway) He recognised me from The Tin Hat in Hinckley which I managed approx 4 years ago. Dean said he was doing ok but the fish were affected by all the rain which had thrown all sorts of stuff into the lake and disturbed them. Peg 1 was opposite 1 st island and Dean was using his idiot stick.

On peg 2 was Bob, a newcomer. By now I could clearly see peg 3 and there was the tell tail dog.Aubrey's DogAubrey Strawberry

I went across to talk to Aubrey. Aubrey said it had been a hard day for fishing. His spot was in between islands, but he didn't seem to think it was a disadvantage. If you can fish you can fish anywhere he said. I took a photo of ‘scruffy' the dog so if you go to 5 ways you too will know Aubrey by site. Aubrey took scruffy's coat off for the pic so he may be wearing a fetching blue mac when you go depending on the weather.

Peg 4 was Kev who had John his father-in-law with him to observe and learn John said. He was edging his way back into the fishing game after a break. Kev used the method feeder by the 2 nd island most of the match and his pole in the main attack. Again he wasn't predicting big things at the weigh in.

Peg 5 was empty but Eddie Sharrod was on peg 6. Eddie fished mostly for Carp at the far bank. He was finishing the match with corn in his margins. He was optimistic as he had 4 or 5 good sized carp in his net. He commented that it had been a queer day with him being hot one minute cold the next, and when it rained it was at a different angle to the breeze.

Peg 7 was empty and John was on peg 8 He fished the far bank 2 nd island by a bush on his left he was a bit fed up I think. He had mostly small stuff and I could see a float stuck in the greenery on the island that he had lost.

At the all out I was surprised at the amount of flapping these fish do when being placed from net to weighing in bag (probably there is a word for this but I don't know it). Deans new carp friendly net caught about 6 fish by their fins, but it looked like a reasonable catch. Bobs catch was all small fish in comparison. Eddie was right to be optimistic his net of 2 skimmers, carp and a monkey wrench was the top weight.

Sunday

Andy rings me at 6a.m... Today is the first club match of the season for Bedworth Police A.C.

Andy picks me up at 6.45 and we head for 5 ways. We cheekily have breakfast and a report on yesterdays match. Then with good snap under our belts we head up the road to Dave's pool or the Jack Wilson Pairs. Traditionally the first trophies match of the year.

Andy Draw's peg 7 on the island, I'm on peg 12. I've drawn the match favourite Simon frost as my partner. Andy has no partner and draws out the hat for a pairing. The plonka pulls peg 12; yes you've got it Big Sam. So I've got two partners.

This is roach water with carp and bream as back up. Chopped worm and castor is my approach, catching steadily all match until 20mins to go when I hook into a ghost carp. These are the hardest fighting fish of the carp family. It finally gets netted weighing 8lb 4oz.

The Match results were;

1 st Simon Frost 37lb 8oz

2 nd Mark Mallabone 26lb 12oz

3 rd David Mallabone 19lb 9oz

4 th Big Sam 15lb 10oz

Simon and I have 53lb 4oz and the Jack Wilson Pairs Trophy. My other partner Andy suffered a poor match returning 4lb 10oz.

Log on next week for Saturdays open at 5 ways and Sundays match at Blythe Fisheries, Bridge Pool.
