Friday 22nd June 2007
Friday night walked out the house into brilliant sunshine, within minutes a deluge of rain called a shower – Again river sport for the weekend is out of the question.
Up at the Lib after umbrella protection all the muppets were on show. Bally's red shirt was sitting brilliantly ironed. It was Lenny's birthday. Andy was late after a power snooze.
Ordered a round of toast for breakfast with an all day breakfast as a side order – more abuse from Suzie, the owner of the greasy spoon on the green.
Karen and Paul at 5 ways greeted the match men. Andy collected 2 mugs of tea. Paul was telling me there is a C.I.U. Leicestershire teams of 4 match next week and so some anglers were competing today for practice. He had pegged the match all round the 1 st island.
Andy drew peg 1, Dean peg 4, Eddie Sharrod on 5. That's it I thought that's the frame today as they were all on the preferred left bank. I drew peg 10 down on the right. The peg I beat myself up about 4 weeks ago. The other anglers I didn't know as they were from Leicester .
Normal tactics chop worm and casters main attack, cat meat in the margins. I set the feeder rod up just in case it was needed.
I was out fishing the guys either side of me. A Leicester lad was bank walking after 2 hours. He said he'd had 1 bite and it was a struggle down his end. I thought I must be top weight this side.
I was intrigued to know what was happening on Andy's side of the island. I re-fed my swims and took a walk. To my surprise Andy was struggling on bits, No sign of any Carp. Dean had 1 roach, Eddie dry netting! Aubrey Strawberry had a few bits. With a smug smile I admitted to Andy I'd got over 4 lb in the net.
Back at my peg I got my head down, switching baits every time I caught a perch, skimmers were now coming steadily.
On the final whistle 6lb was the top weight on the left bank, it just hadn't produced. Andy's flyer peg only produced 2lb 10oz.
I put 9lb 10oz and as leading the field of 16 fishing. I was assured a place on the frame. The last 2 to weigh both fished pellet and paste to record 17lb and 12lb respectively.
The spring league is now finished. The result;
1 st Big Sam 85 points
2 nd Andy 66 points
3 rd Dean 56 points
4 th Eddie 42 points
5 th Aubrey 41 points.
Having won the winter league and now the spring league, Having 20 top 3 finishes from 22 matches is quite satisfying. But now its time to move on. Andy and I will now vary our Saturday fishing on different waters. As we're club match fishing on Sundays. We hope to try Coomb Lake , Coventry next Saturday. Its water I haven't fished for over 20 years. It's not bye bye 5 ways its just time for a break. Andy and I have both really enjoyed our time on the beautiful water, made some great fiends with owners Paul and Karen and not forgetting young Harry their son, and Aubrey Strawberry who adopted us way back in January, Plus of course all the other moaners – sorry that should read match men.
Sunday 24 th B.P.A.C
A club match at Blythe Water's Bridge Pool near Knowle.
A lovely water with various features and comfortable pegging.
Usual chopped worm and caster tactics, but only roach until introduction of sweet corn when bream moved in. A carp on cat meat and three lost big fish gave me a 14lb total. Andy switched from pole to feeder rod with worm on the hook in the final 1 ½ hours giving him a total weight of 17lb 10oz. Simon ‘snorkel' Frost won his third match in a row after having 101lb from Makin's No.4 Lake on Wednesday.
Tight Lines, stretchy elastics to all our readers.
Log on next week for more fun and games - Big Sam
A big thank you to Melanie for last weeks match report. But please next time STAMP, JUMP, HOP and SKIP on Deans Rod. A very in-depth match report, especially for someone who knows very little about Angling. Well done.
Tight Lines
