Match 6

5 Ways Spring League . Match 5

5 Ways Wolvey

Took a taxi to the Liberal club Friday night, Ann (my partner) had just washed her hair and it was sheeting down with rain! The weather forecast for the next few days was not good; High winds and prolonged showers, Great!!

Andy was sitting in our normal seats; the Friday night crowd were assembling. All the excitement was about young Charlie Ford buying a 12 metre pole from e-bay. I only had one glass all night, refilled several times mind you.

Woke u early Saturday morning the sun was shining but it was windy. My mobile went off; Andy was on his way to pick me up. Breakfasted and fresh baited he headed for 5 ways.

Paul and Karen the new owners were on the car park to meet and greet the match-men.

Very poor turn out, only 8 anglers on the match today. Paul had pegged the Lake out for the competitors. 4 pegs down the right bank and 4 down the left.

Peg 1 Aubrey end of 2 nd Island

Peg 2 Andy not a happy chappie open water between 2 nd & 3 rd Island

Peg 3 Ray and Peg 4 Tommy Coles on 3rd island

I drew peg 5 on the 3rd island just below the open water. It looked horrible the waves looked like the North Sea ; it was the worst peg on the match length.

Pegs 6, 7 & 8 were on 2 nd island and very sheltered from the west wind.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing because I got this match all wrong. Trying to hold a long pole in the wind was totally wrong as bait presentation was difficult.

Andy I could see was catching silverfish but was also hampered by the wind. Every now and then he tried a swim feeder at distance but this method was slow.

Tommy Coles was catching well having put a few carp in his net he was well in front.

Andy indicated that Dean on Peg 6 had started catching carp, we were both in trouble.

I tried down the margins using cat meat but to no avail. I was catching fish but not fast enough to compete. Although, I did pull out a Big Bream and lost another descent fish due to fishing too far out.

Another look down the margins with worm on the hook gave me a couple of waspee's (small perch) and then my float sailed away. The elastic on my pole stretched across the water. SHE WAS ON!!!! Moby Dick – Free Willie – Flipper I didn't care who it was I had to play this fish with respect and care. 20 min's later she lay in my landing net. We were both exhausted. My heart was racing. I got the thumbs up from Andy as he watched my performance with Green eyes (jealously, although he denies it). I sat back and poured myself a cup of coffee and phoned my good lady, Ann to come up with her camera. This fish deserves to be on film never mind the ugly old un holding it. The last hour flew by, Tommy Coles was still bagging. Andy caught on the swim feeder using corn on the hook.

At the weigh in;

1 st Tommy 30lb 3oz

2 nd Dean 22lb 11oz

3 rd Aubrey 12lb 8oz

4 th Andy 10lb 12oz

5 th Ray 9lb 7oz

6 th Sam 9lb 6oz

7 th Eddie 8lb 1oz

8 th Wayne who didn't weigh in!

Congratulations to Tommy he deserves his win and in style. Ann took photos of him and his catch. Paul weighed my beautifully scaled mirror carp – 7lb on the scales. I posed for photos with this magnificent fish and returned it to the water.

Andy picked up 4 points for 4 th place; 2 points were awarded for 6 th place. We both tie on 50 points leading the 12 match league. No cash envelope for either of us this week, the first time in the series.

Sunday

Andy and I opted to fish the top end of the match lake. Peeping Tom.A.C. Pegged below us on a club match, which was won with 16lb.

The umbrellas went up as it started to rain. We didn't care we were catching fish. 5 hours later, both soaking wet, we packed in because the wind changed direction. You know what happens when the wind changes in blows Mary Poppins…………

Log on next week for match 7
