Match 9 2nd June 2007
The morning began with breakfast at the village café, my companions were Mark Elton and his son Luke, and then it was on to the bait shop for the usual supplies.
We got to 5 ways and Mark fetched the tea. The mission was to obtain the points necessary to regain my rightful position as leader of the spring league whilst the pretender is away! I only needed 2 points but aimed for more.
Paul from 5 ways pegged the match down the preferred Left bank but unfortunately didn't heed my advice regarding the ‘open water' I had advised him not to peg it as it is definitely a disadvantage to be here. Paul pegged it anyway, number 8. At the draw Aubrey had peg 1, Mark had peg 4 and guess who got to fish that unwanted peg, yes yours truly!!
I began with my usual 11metre line and fed the margins, as I was on open water I went with the feeder rod hoping to net something from the corner of the island.
The weather was bright and hot, ok for Carp who patrolled the shade off the islands (this is why open water was undesirable) but a little to hot for the Silverfish.
In the first half hour Mark had already netted 2 Carp, I persevered with the feeder but no Carp showed. I had to be contented with the silverfish which came from the 11 metre line, nothing from the margins. In the last 30 minutes I caught a Carp from the feeder but it was too little (2-3lb) too late. I also managed to loose 2 feeders during the match.
The final result, as shown below, left me 7 th and just outside of the coveted points. My mate Sam will be more than pleased that I didn't manage to get a point and will take great pleasure in telling me how I fished it all wrong, and that the pupil hasn't learnt anything from the master!
1 st Eddy 24lb 15oz
2 nd Mark Elton 23lb 12oz
3 rd Dean 23lb 10oz
4 th Aubrey 20lb 6oz
5 th Jake 15lb 5oz
6 th Alan 10lb 12oz
On the positive side my catch of 9lb 10oz was a good weight for silverfish. The league is still lead by Big Sam on 67 points, I retain 2 nd on 66 points, Mark Elton shares 3 rd with Dean both on 34 points. With Sam and I both missing a match for a forth coming wedding (I know you are thinking what bad planning having a wedding on a match day, we tried but they wouldn't move it, some people!) we need to be on top form for the remaining matches to secure victory.
Weather as Saturday I set off to restore my confidence in 5 Ways. I fished at the permanent peg 2, just at the bottom with little walking involved. I proceeded to net 18-20lb of Carp and mixed fish. Very satisfactory, my confidence was renewed ready for next week's battle. The only downside to this pleasurable mornings fishing was the loss of a feeder (yes I know I lost 2 yesterday). I also lost 2 pole rigs, getting too tight to the far bank, and the final straw was when I got caught in the reeds, I pulled for the break and the elastic snapped – I lost everything. Replacement makes this a costly weekend.
Log on next week for the return of Big Sam tales from his exploits in Holland if he can remember anything and the highlights of match 10.
