Late into the Lib on Friday after paying for our fishing trip to East Anglia in September, We'll be based at Hemsby. Bally's Red shirt made it a colourful night spending as much time outside as in.(thanks to no smoking Law).
Andy and I had an early start Saturday morning heading to Coombe Lake for more punishment. After a long trek we settled in peg's 37 and 39. As normal with Bream fishing it was a slow start.
Andy had a few indications of fish feeding but no takes. I latched onto a big bream but lost it in the lily's. We were both fishing long range ground bait feeder tactics, alternating Hook and baits.
With 2 bream in the net it was a struggle. Andy had a 2 in 1. He'd hooked a skimmer which he was bringing through the lilies when it was attacked by a pike (Andy says it was about 2ft). Skilfully Andy played both into his landing net.
Later I had a personal best bream weighing 9lb 4oz.
I returned 6 fish, Andy returned 4 fish back to the lake, Before trekking back to Andy's motor.
Sunday saw us on a club match at the pool on Warwick Race Course. A very narrow path around this watercourse. Chopped worm and caster was our main attack. With Perch and Hybrids the target. Hybrids are cross bred Roach and Bream. A hard fighting fish. Long pole was adopted by most anglers, the margins were not producing at all.
3 big Carp were hooked by match men but, all was lost due to their size breaking hook lengths after bottoming out pole elastics.
1 st Mark Mallabone 11lb
2 nd Big Sam 8lb 10oz
3 rd Raider Harrison 7lb
4 th Andy 6lb 11oz
Five Ways Double Header
Friday night arrives at last. Bad week at work as I've just been handed my redundancy notice. The Friday night humour is rife at the Lib. Andy and I discuss the prospects of five ways over the next 2 days. With a lot of cold water going into the Lake the water might not fish.
Saturday Morning (14 th ) we visit the Village Pantry for our normal tucker then next door for our bait. On arrival at the wolvey complex Paul and Karen greet us, The other anglers ask where we've been and Strawberry Aubrey hugged us as if we'd been missing for ages.
Paul has permanently pegged the match lake. With peg one outside the bait bar, running anti clockwise round the lake. I drew Peg 5 on the right hand bank. Andy drew peg 13 just on 2 nd island. The match was pegged around the top half of the lake. Peg 42 taking top weight of 27lb, 2 nd 12lb 10oz, 3 rd 12lb 4oz. Andy's net weighed 5lb 5oz I had 6lb 9oz. The results around the lake were poor.
A return to five ways for a Bedworth Police club match. It's my responsibility to peg club matches and I've decided to use pegs35 to 50 down the left hand side 2 nd and 3 rd islands. Knowing Saturdays results I thought the fish had moved down the lake following the wind. Karen laid on a perfect breakfast for our members who as usual pigged out.
Andy drew the long walk to peg 35. I drew peg 47 with Paul Lathbury on my right and Adam Mallabone on my left. Good company on any day of the week. My normal tactics of chopped worm and caster were paying off, taking several skimmers early on. Andy was struggling on 35 as were several other members. The last 2 hours the carp switched to feed. Result;
1 st peg 46 Dave Mallabone 28lb13oz
2 nd peg 45 Adam Mallabone 23lb 12oz
3 rd peg 48 Paul Lathbury 23lb 4oz
4 th Peg 47 Big Sam 20lb 2oz
We all sat together taking the leading weights.
The B.P.A.C. had an evening match at the Riddings Fishery at Grendon on the Crucian Pool. 12 Anglers taking part. I fished cat meat throughout taking too many small fish for a 24lb net and 4 th position. Club Treasurer Paul Mallabone won this match with 45lb. Onslow was 2 nd with 36lb with one fish weighing in at 11lb 10oz. Adam had 32lb for 3 rd place.
Fridays torrential rain has wiped out river sport throughout the midlands and every fishery is suffering from soggy conditions.
Andy ventured out to Parker's ARBURY Farm, Bulkington for a red letter day. Taking fish on feeder and pole all day.8 Good bream, 7 carp and hoards of skimmers and roach on sweet corn and maggot. All in all a good days sport.
Andy picked me up at 7.15 and travelled to Blythe Fishery Knowle for a BPAC match on the Willow pool. I drew the Golden peg, To add more pressure the golden peg holds £100 to the match winner if he is at the right peg. This weeks peg was number 24. Andy was on peg 26. We both opted for attacks with chopped worm and caster at 12 metres. And both had small blade roach. Andy switched to the feeder rod and sweet corn loosing 6 good carp.
I tried cat meat in the margins and hooked 2 carp before switching to big worm, taking bream, tench and small carp for a 5 th place at 21lb Andy put 3lb on the scales. .
Results;
1 st Fred Lawrence 30lb
2 nd PETTYCOAT (Neil) Lane 29lb9oz
3 rd Silent Cliff Knight 28lb 3oz.
A relaxing day in prospect, reading the Times and The Mail, catching up on all the news, Gawping at page 3 in the Sun, Just chillin' plain ol' chillin'.
The phone rings at 9.30 its my mucker Andy - ‘Pick you up in 30 mins'. I rush round getting ready and we're off to Arbury Farm, Parkers place at Bulkington.
The water is still high but with a nice colour.
We start catching skimmers and crucian carp on pieces of worm. A look in the margins gives a few bigger carp on catmeat. With no rain it was a pleasant days fishing, Finished off with a few pints in the Lib.
Being out of work had its compensations. My son Chris comes over from Tipton for a days fishing, we join Andy at Parkers Arbury Farm. Weather is just perfect. Andy fishes at 14 metres taking a mixed bag mostly on sweet corn. Our Chris uses a 8 metre whip with pellet and corn for mostly crucian carp. I chop and change baits getting out fished by both these heavy weights. But catch a Barbel of 4lb, a total surprise as we didn't know Barbel was in these waters.
We all finished with over 20lb of fish. A very nice day with lots of banter and humour between the three of us.
Andy picked me up at 7.30 and we headed straight for breakfast at the village pantry. After a hearty fry up we collected our bait from next door.
Today we went to Mill on the Soar a 40 peg water near Broughton Astley, a place Andy has never fished. I hadn't been on this water for over 5 years. It has a reputation for carp and bream. We fished peg no's 27 & 28 on the far side of the lake.
fish throughout the day.
Our match today has been switched from the river Avon to Fortway Farm at Stoney Stanton, obviously because after the rains the river conditions are out of sorts. This match length is 100 yards long, 12 yards wide and 5 feet deep.
Andy and I both drew the end pegs, which proved to be decisive in the result. Andy's catch included 2 small barbel, carp, roach and skimmers. I had roach and skimmers also carp using worm as hook bait. Dave Mallabone had 2 perch over 1lb 8oz in his net, both good specimen for this water.
Andy put 16lb 2oz on the scales, my weight 15lb 1oz, Dave Mallabone 10lb 10oz for 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd respectively.
